How leading companies, together with science and the canton of Zug, are leading a promising process to a breakthrough.
In order to achieve the climate goals, the sponsorship intends to raise the process of splitting methane into hydrogen from laboratory to industrial level and to use it quickly in Swiss industrial companies.
The Association for the Decarbonization of Industry (VZDI) is responsible for the implementation of the initiative and the development of the ecosystem for the emission-free use of methane.
Thanks to close cooperation between research and industry, academic knowledge can be quickly transferred into practice and the process can thus achieve a breakthrough at industrial level.
Q4 2022
Methane pyrolysis laboratory plant as a working prototype
Q4 2024
Construction of a methane pyrolysis plant with an output of 10 kg H2 per hour
Q1 2025
Commissioning of the first industrial plant in the high-temperature process in Zug/CH and reduction of CO2 emissions by 150 t CO2/year
Q4 2026
Supporting the development of an ecosystem for the use of renewable methane and thus the realization of negative emissions
“State-imposed measures are not enough to stop global warming. In close cooperation, research and industry have the potential to further accelerate decarbonization. The Association for the Decarbonization of Industry is a role model that will hopefully be imitated in other areas.”
Andreas Bittig - Association for the decarbonization of industry
January 2023
«We are convinced that the cooperation of business, science and politics is the best breeding ground for innovation. The “Industry Decarbonization” initiative is a prime example.”
Silvia Thalmann-Gut - Zug Economics Director
June 2022
“The decarbonization concept of the association for decarbonization of the industry consists of a two-stage approach: a first step that can be implemented quickly with the decarbonization of natural gas and a second step in which the natural gas is replaced by renewable, synthetic methane. Replacing fossil natural gas with renewable methane will result in negative CO2 emissions»
